Preventive Dental Hygiene
Prevent dental issues from developing and keep your smile healthy with regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings at Sheppard West Dental in North York.
Keep Your Smile Healthy
Twice yearly oral examinations give your dentist an opportunity to identify any oral health issues that may be developing and to create a plan to provide you with effective treatment options.
During your exam, your dentist will take a look at the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Your examination may also include dental x-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, your dentist will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums for any signs of oral cancer which can be difficult for patients to detect on their own.
Oral Hygiene Routines for Healthy Smiles
To keep your smile healthy between dental appointments, or dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing at least once daily.
Hygiene Cleaning
Before or after your examination, your dental hygienist will perform a professional cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent and treat disease.
Your hygienist will begin by using a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up. Next, a polisher will be used with coarse toothpaste to remove any leftover stains or plaque, followed by flossing to help remove loosened debris from between your teeth.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay. If you or your child has a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment as part of your hygiene exam.
